Here's what I learned about my leg today:
The pain below my knee hurts at about mile 3, then stops. Possibly because it's finally warmed up at that point.
It's not the new (cushion) shoes, they don't hurt, but they don't make it go away.
It's not the orthotics. Orthotics do actually help (damn - I was really hoping that was my magic bullet).
It's not ITB syndrome (whew!).
It's not my anterior tibialis (though I have a really big one).
The main complainers are Peroneus Longus and Peroneus Brevis. This makes sense, since I run with that foot internally rotated. I even walk with that foot doing wonky things. I've always thought that the weird rotating sicklefoot thing that I do with that foot is the thing that causes me trouble, so maybe it is. I so rarely get to watch it - I have to rely on what others tell me about what my feet do.
I recall breaking that ankle when I was a tad. There is also an enormous scar on the foot from wearing braces as a wee thing. My armchair diagnosis: I may have some kind of muscular weakness/dysfunction in the ankle that I never really got back after being casted for 6 weeks (at age 13). Hey - it happens all the time! The more I read about the connection of these muscles to ankle stuff it kinda makes sense. But - why now? Why is it a problem all these years later? And uh, how do I fix it?
Is it connected to my hip? God I hope so - but I have no idea.
I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV.
I'm passing this information out to qualified professionals - don't know what the next step is, but it's very interesting learning about my body along the way.
I'm waiting for my danged aquajogger belt to come in, so maybe I can do some pool work. I'm just along for the ride at this point.
I don't feel like I can safely sign up for any long distance anythings, but at least I can run a little - I am grateful for that.

keep workin' the problem.
i'm so sorry you're going through this and i hope the professionals come up with a good diagnosis and treatment plan soon. i had a stress fracture a while back and used the aquajogger, i think you'll like it, it'll help keep your fitness level up for sure.
I *do* play a doctor on tv and I've diagnosed you as having a bone in your leg. Rx? Two shots of tequila and call me in the morning.
Excellent sluething job. I hope the information leads to a set of exercises that solve your problem.
Um.... I'm gonna just go ahead and say it.... IT'S JUST NOT FAAAAAAAIR! The racing and training that you love so much, to be balked? Bummer. Hope you (all the experts etc) get this figured out.
I really hope you've got some good docs working on this. Let me know it you want any reccomendations.
