I don't know what to do with myself with extra time. So here's what I got done during recovery week.
* I went shopping and bought actual girly work clothes for myself. It's been way too long since I bought clothes for myself that weren't wicking. Clothes that look good, that fit me, and aren't race t-shirts.
At first I found this challenging. I ask you - what is up with the bad fitting clothes? Do they not appreciate feminine figures anymore? The tube-tops? The long shorts thing? The in-laws are in town from Scotland. I took my mother-in-law with me, and she picked up a piece at Old Baby and said, "Oh this is a nice skirt!" I said, I think you'll find that's supposed to be a top. She said, "surely not, this is a skirt, see here's the waist..." and I said, uh, that's where your breasts are supposed to go.
Oops.
Nonetheless, two major cute outfits purchased, in my age range - in spite of the fact that current fashion would have me looking like a 70's refugee, or 80's retropunk (been there, done that). Once I hit the right zone, it was like triathlete heaven - everything was my size, everything was on sale, it all looked good. Plus, since I'm viewed as an athlete in my circles, somewhat casual dress is totally accepted. Yes, I am trying to dress like a grown-up.
* I bought a new pair of shoes. Me and shoes have been very stand-offish with each other lately, I've had a very conservative shoe relationship going on. I ditched my orthotics a few months ago, I gradually weaned myself off them. I know now that I need to always wear shoes with good arch support (heels are right out). Many of my old shoes are just inadequate, or I wore them before I changed everything by wearing the orthotics. And I've been slowly wearing out the decent old shoes (with the orthotics) and not replacing them. Plus, summer is here - sandals with good arch support has to be a special purchase. I got these gorgeous Chacos on sale and I heart them.
* I got both cars washed. I've been too busy to even stop by the car wash for I don't know how long. You never know how long it will take in the carwash queue - could be 10 minutes, could be an hour (Tick Tock, people!), so the cars have gotten pretty gross. Basic maintenance has been achieved (oil changes, etc.) because without it, let's face it, you don't have a car. Anything over that gets demoted on the list.
* I re-filled my favourite face lotion, a real girly luxury. I've been running low forever, and have been too busy to go and get some. It required a trip to the mall - a place I don't seem to frequent anymore.
* I have been reading an actual book not about triathlon. It's really good. It has words and everything. No pictures, no lists, no numbers. Weird.
* The yard maintenance has been lacking for some time. We're so far behind on the maintenance of tree limbs and leaves and cutting things, I've had to get help with that one. So I hired help this week. Soon we'll be able to use our back yard again, and we might even unearth the grill!
I still need to make that trip to the hair salon. Sadly, I didn't get there before recovery week ended. It may be months before my hair gets attention again. It's getting absurdly long now.
Unfortunately, my children look seriously neglected. Does no one cut their hair?
oops. I think that's my job...

You are so far ahead of me... as usual. My car is filthy, my hair needs to be cut and colored and I have nothing to wear. *sob*
And no recovery for me. I have a 1/2 marathon in 24 days and I could barely handle a 5K today.
Glad you made the best of your time.
i'm a keens ho.
i don't do clothes. i shop at opshops, because i can't be bothered with what's out. i did the 80s once. very badly. why repeat?
I know what you mean about the clothes thing. I think my taste is changing after wearing workout wear all the time..Oh and forget about my car. It remains dirty..
:)
I now have this mental image of your children running around bare-footed and wild-headed but proudly wearing tee shirts that say, "Our mommy is a Triathlon Star – don't worry, she'll get 'round to us soon."
Children and clean car don't mix. Of course girls are probably cleaner than boys...
I'm totally jealous of your work clothes. I'm not even allowed to wear denim skirts. Because, you know, if you want to really related to kids, you should dress like fuddy-duddies from the 50s. Oh, and yeah, I was having trouble seeing one of the people's faces that last time I saw them...
I understand the clothes thing! I own way too many synthetic clothes.

Good heavens! That book! Gonna have to read it now..... and those shoes are TDF (to die for!).
Ah, comfy sandals. Mmmm, new clothes. Lucky girl.
Oh, and children are much cuter with unkempt hair. It makes them look cherubic. Totally proven and documented.
Funny post. I was talking to my wife the other day and almost brought up the topic of how I wanted to landscape our jungle of a backyard (like I have been saying I would do since 2005) and I finally decided the hell with, I'll just talk triathlon because she doesn't actually expect the landscaping to get done anyway. I give in... looks like I'll have to hire someone too!
Isn't it strange to briefly re-enter the land of "all the other people?" I'm with ya on the clothes; who is that stuff made for? I decided to pick up a couple things last week, too, but that turned out to be an exercise in frustration. I decided that if I couldn't figure out what the hell it is while it's on the hanger, I just pass it by! Love the shoes, the book looks great - long hair is a good thing - you always have that ponytail option!
It goes without saying that the girls are tres adorable no matter what!
Fabulous Chacos, Dread Pirate!!!
Totally off topic, but OMG...
Pirate, I read references to you all the time over at geekgirl's blog and a couple of days ago she even posted a picture of you, but it wasn't until last night, looking at the Outlaws website during a fit of insomnia, that I realized that... I know you!
I'm Jennie of childhood adventures in Aztec, jenniegv at gmail.com if you want to get in touch.
What a ridiculously small world. (shakes head)
OMG OMG!!! We spent like...ALL of our geeky childhood together!!!
SEE? Blogs ARE good for something!!
OMG! OMG! This is crazy! Got your email, just responded - please thank GeekGirl for her part in this - without all her references to you I might never have even gone to the Outlaws site (I followed a link from your blog) and who knows how long I might have read your blog not knowing it was you! OMG!
I went to the hair salon yesterday...but now I need clothes on sale...we'd make a great team! (If you share your clothes that is...)
I love the "young" look- and unfortunately I am not. Don't you hate old ladies that think they are in their 20s and try to dress like it? :-)
Kids don't have to be dressed and combed in the summer. That's what the neighborhood pool is for- bath time! (and everyone sports green hair in the summer...it's the new blond!)
LMAO. Nice post all the way around. Glad you got it all done. Your kids will be fine as long as you have cable or satellite tv!!!!!
LOL!! Your life sounds huantingly familiar except... you are getting it done!! LOL
Clothes that don't wick. I'll have to remember that one. Thats priceless
The recovery weeks can be very rewarding. I usually hate them, but it's amazing how much free time we have when not training!
