recovery week?

Here is one of my people. In this portrait, we are in San Francisco and she is in the process of perfecting the art of making a hat out of a table napkin. Where napkin hats are concerned, this girl has mad skillz. She sat proudly for this photo, and kept that napkin on her head for a full minute. She's five, she has no idea how silly she looks, and she does not care because she's proud of herself. She's having fun. I hope she never gets too self conscious to keep having fun.

And speaking of having fun, relatively speaking, I've taken it easy this week.

My beloved is out of town and I've been kiddo wrangling all week, single mom style. I think I missed them. And then, when I get to spend all this time with them, I think, No, I didn't miss them that much.

I kid! They are good chilruns, I love them dearly.

I'm taking it so easy, it's almost like a recovery week. I'm looking at my mileage to see how it compares with last week's balls-to-the-wall effort:

Last week I ran 29 miles. I think that's some kind of record for my weekly run mileage. By comparison, this week I'll do a paltry 23.

Last week I swam 7200 yards, including an unprecedented 3500 yard session in the pool. This week a measly 5800. Meters. Wait, that's 6340 yards....

Last week's bike mileage: about 150, including the last Time Trial spin class. This week will end with a tiny 93 (all trainer miles).

Bwa ha ha ha ha! Recovery week. That's a good one!

Anyway. This week, I noticed that I didn't feel as sharp as last. There's something about slowing down that feels a bit rough. While it's definitely good for me, the engine just does not run as smoothly. I do feel a bit like I've been burning the candle at both ends - haven't had time to blog, haven't been getting the right sleep.

Though I miss my outside time, I have been looking forward to having fun with my girls. Today, after a long trainer ride, we painted toenails and ran girly shopping errands. They wore their prettiest dresses, we shopped for jewelry. Tonight I took the kids to see a movie. We sat and ate popcorn and giggled - a little absence was good.

Tomorrow I will sleep in as long as they do - then we go to the gym. I'll run for an hour and a half, we'll swim together, and eat pancakes, and life will be good.

...like it already is.

Hmmm, now I want pancakes. And I probably won't go run and swim beforehand to justify it :-)

Napkinhead is soooo cute. If you hadn't been swamped mid-week, I may not have heard from you ;)

Awww... I miss your girls. I STILL have not put away the toys and I have something for them - just need to send it.

Your training sounds intense! Good job. 93 miles on a trainer - ow.

Hmmm. perhaps it's also time for Auntie Misty to teach some new restaurant tricks - things to do with straws, napkins, etc., and she can wear her hat while she tries them. :-)))

I feel the same way when my five-year old dances. It makes me sad to know that someday he will be too self-conscious to enjoy himself that much.

Your people have a terrific mom. You have terrific people. I love how that works. So I hope your people don't mind that, because of your fabulosity, I basically put you in charge of the entire personal protection/physical fitness department for my administration.
