there's no place like home

On Sunday, I wanted to spend time with My People. Wouldn't you know, the training plan from the coach had a 1 hr ride on the trainer in store for me.

Oh joy.

I knew that the Wizard of Oz would be on TBS in the evening, as Tammy mentions in her blog. My People, being four years old, have never ever seen this film. In my view, this is a formative movie. A touchstone, crucial to their personal growth. It's right up there with taking a first step.

Of course, what with scary witches and so forth there is no way they could go through such an important event unsupervised. And watching it on TV, polluted with commercials just seems...well, wrong! So I went one step further and rented it from the local video store.

After a quick dinner and a superfast bath, I tucked the People into my bed and turned on the DVD. I set up my trainer, and went to town.

At first they complained that mummy was too loud on her bicycle. That stopped after I jacked up the sound real loud.

In between answering questions about the wicked witch (girls, check out those flying monkeys - you don't see those every day!) and explaining the tin man, I did climbing intervals and 5 minute time trials. And I actually got a decent workout. I worked hard. I sweated bigtime.

In this process I have reassured myself that it is sometimes possible to have quality training and time with My People.

Obviously, this can't happen for Century rides, but still - this is an important part of my process of finding creative ways to include my family in my training as much as possible.

I spent a large part of last week agonizing over my selfish desire to do an Iron distance race. When I really searched my soul, and thought hard, and felt those feelings at the pit of my stomach, I found the pebble covering up my reason. I turned that stone over and I knew exactly why I want to do it...

I love it.

I love running 10 miles at dawn, then coming home for pancakes.

I love riding 50 miles before anybody wakes up, then coming home for a nap with My People.

I love swimming until I feel like I'm gonna hurl on deck.

Mostly, I love feeling like a million bucks the rest of the time.

OK, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I don't always love it right at the moment I'm doing it, but the rest of the time, I do.

I love it.

Oh - and did I mention I did a 6 mile tempo run tonight (half in the dark), then swam 1000m? Oh yeah baby! I. Feel. Great.

those are great reasons!

now, the real question is, are Your People, my people? or, are we talking about different people.

because, personally, if you are letting Your People watch the Wizard of Oz at age four, then they are probably old enough to read my blog...

BUT, based on the scarring i received from watching flying monkeys in black and white at a tender age, i hope Your Peoples did better than me!

i will NEVER watch the Wizard of Oz again, regardless of my age, AND, i know my reasons...

flying monkeys -- YEESH!

You can do centuries with them. You just have to watch wizard of oz three of four time in a row! :)

Bold, my wife is deathly afraid of the witch...

The local Jr. High did a production of TWOO last year this time... I took MY people to see it. Oldest LOOOOVED it, so we left her with the Grandparents and took the rest home at half-time, intermission... whatever.

I think four is an excellent age for this show!

The rest? You GO!
