"Daylight," if you can call it that, starts at around 8:30 a.m., and is pretty dim. It ends at about 4 or 4:30. As we are pretty far north of the equator, the sun never goes very high into the sky. Our beds are all covered in duvets that are easily 6 inches thick. Combine this with the fact that we pretty much threw our watches away when we got off the plane, and there is really no reason to get out of bed. So far we've done little but eat and sleep. A lot.
I call this the Hibernation Vacation.
However, life goes on after we go home. I still have that crazy half-mary to run, and it's really coming up soon. So I scheduled a long run for Saturday.
I was thinking 9 miles. Beloved was thinking 10.
I like where his head is at.
So we headed for the Esk Valley trail. The trailway is a paved path that makes excellent urban use of a disused railway, the Edinburgh to Peebles line which I understand closed in 1969. It is used by dog walkers, runners, bikers, anyone. As it is a railway, it has an approximately 1% or 2% grade uphill as it travels south.
It was about a mile to the start of the trail from the In-Laws' house in Dalkeith, and from there we headed south.
We hadn't started particularly early, probably about 9:30. There were a few people out, mostly older men out in waxed jackets walking their dogs. We said "morning" to everyone we passed. We got a similar response. I could tell that what they were really thinking was "you people are crazy."
At mile 5 (not far from Rosewell) we turned around and headed back. To that point I'd been feeling pretty good. Not fast, but good.
As soon as we turned around the knee started up. Stupid knee! What is up with the stupid knee? Admittedly it was downhill all the way back, but 1% grade? Come on!
By the time we got back I was limp-running.
Beloved wasn't much better - he'd jiggered his foot on a long run a few nights before, and was grumpy by the time we arrived. We walked the last 1/2 mile or so.
So, OK, knee hurts. I'll give it a couple days and I'll be OK. Right?
Today I went running with the sheep - 4.7 miles - after two days off, and sure enough as soon as I started downhill the stupid knee started up again. Stupid knee!
I'm officially freaking out about this...Please tell me my leg won't fall off?!

Your leg? It will not fall off. The extra soreness you are experiencing is due to the sudden humidity change. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
If it does fall off, pick it up and bring it home with you. I hear the drs. here are better at sticking them back on. :-)
it appears to be a serious case of Old Age-itis. I have it, too. Every once in a while, I get some flavor of jelly bean stuck in my knee joint. Very painful. Very frustrating. Take some ibuprofen, drink your recovery drink, curse the run-gods that do this to you. IT should do the trick.
Nahhhh... it won't fall off but it might help to check the milage on your shoes and get an evaluation at a reputable running shoe store.
Stay tuned...
Ooops! First Anonymous Coward t'was I, bon!
Don't freak out! Your knee is just irritated you're running on vacation. Shame on you!
Don't freak out-- just take good care of it before your 13.1 and it'll probably behave.
Happy new year!
